Kazakstan Holds Presidential Election
*Kazakstan began its presidential election 7 a.m. Sunday with four candidates running.
They are incumbent President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Communist Party leader Serkbolsyn Abdildin, Senate member Engels Gabbasov and Customs chief Gani Kasimov.
The Interfax news agency said about 220 international observers would supervise the whole process of the election taking place in 9,645 constituencies with more than eight million voters nationwide.
The election would end by 8 p.m. the same day with the preliminary results announced early today.
According to the April 1995 referendum, Nazarbayev will have ended his presidency in year 2000. However, the Kazakh parliament last October revised the constitution and decided to hold election ahead of time.
* President Nursultan Nazarbayev Sunday said that Kazakstan will never join the union consisting of Russia and Belarus.
