Japan Opposes Unilateral Declaration of Palestinian State
Japan called on the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) Saturday evening to refrain from unilaterally declaring an independent state on May 4 as PNA leader Yasser Arafat had indicated on various occasions.
Japanese Foreign Ministry spokesman Masaki Okada said at a press briefing that Japan supported all Palestinian rights in principle, including the right to declare an independent state, but "it's not wise and is counter-productive to unilaterally use that right."
Okada also said Japan will ask Israel to stick to all agreements it has signed with the Palestinians, including the land-for-security Wye River accord, but Japan will also urged the PNA to "proceed with patience" on the path of peace.
Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura arrived in Amman Saturday for a two-day official visit to Jordan as part of his Middle East tour to bolster Japan's role in the region's peace process.
Komura Saturday held talks with Jordanian Crown Prince and the Regent Hassan Ibn Talal, Prime Minister Fayez Tarawneh, Foreign Minister Abdul Ilah Khatib on bilateral ties and the latest developments in the Middle East process.
