Chinese Stance on Kosovo Issue Remains Unchanged
A senior Chinese diplomat said in New York on January 7 that China, in principle, does not favor the involvement of the UN Security Council in the issue of Kosovo, a Serbian province in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia
Shen Guofang, deputy Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, said that "China's stance on this question remains unchanged."
Shen made the statement after the Security Council met on Thursday afternoon behind closed doors to discuss a report on Kosovo by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Separatists and terrorists in Kosovo, making use of the one-sided international pressure imposed on the government of the FRY, wantonly staged armed violence in the province, thus destabilizing the area, destroying the process of national reconciliation and efforts to seek a peaceful solution, and hindering the return of refugees and the work of international humanitarian organizations, he said.
"The Chinese delegation has issued repeated warnings that parties concerned should make efforts to avoid giving separatists and terrorists in Kosovo a false impression that they are being instigated," he said.
To his regret, the Kosovar separatists and terrorists really thought that they have got support from outside, he said.
"As far as the Kosovo issue is concerned, the international community should respect in real earnest the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the FRY," he said.
"Only in this way can it be helpful in getting rid of the illusions of the separatists and terrorists in Kosovo, in effectively promoting the process of the political solution to the question of Kosovo," he said.
