Shenzhen Responses to Mass Poisoning in Jiangxi
����A mass poisoning case was reported on December 25 after residents in Longnan and Dingnan in east China's Jiangxi Province used substandard lard produced by firms in Shenzhen in south China's Guangdong Province. Two people have died from poisoning and another 221 victims have been treated in local hospitals.
����An investigation revealed that the lard was heavily contaminated.
����Local authorities have confiscated 3,000 barrels of the contaminated lard and no poisoning cases have been reported in other parts of the province. Public security bureaus in Jiangxi and Guangdong provinces have arrested 5 suspects responsible for producing and marketing the lard.
����The State Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision has issued an emergency circular recently urging quality and technical supervision departments in Shenzhen, Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian and Hunan to stop the spread of the dangerous product.
