Jiang Zemin Calls for Greater Contributions

����Chinese President Jiang Zemin, general secretary of the Communist Party of CPC Central Committee called on scientists and technicians on January 8 to make greater contributions to the full-scale revitalization of the nation.

����Jiang issued the call during a meeting of winners of awards for scientific and technological advances in 1998. The meeting was held in the Great Hall of the People.

����Mankind is witnessing a global scientific and technological revolution, and the trend for continued economic and social progress will rely mainly on knowledge. He said the importance of creative applications of knowledge is becoming increasingly apparent.

����Scientific and technological advances are becoming an important force in promoting progress of mankind, said Jiang.

����"Any failure to closely follow the tidal wave of scientific and technological advances will leave us in an extremely passive situation," according to the president.

����He noted that China must unswervingly implement Deng Xiaoping's Theory that science and technology are primary productive forces. He said the strategy for using science and education to revitalize the nation and strategy for pursuing sustainable growth must be carried out timely.

����Jiang urged Chinese scientists and technicians to unite and continuously accomplish new achievements in order to make new contributions to the full-scale rejuvenation of the nation.

����Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji and Vice Premier Li Lanqing also attended the meeting.
