Chinese FM Spokesman on US Report

The Chinese side on January 7 expressed its strong resentment against and firm opposition to the recently-issued US report, which accused China of acquiring US military technology through its economic and technological exchanges and cooperation with the United States.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao made the remarks at the regular press conference.

Zhu said that "The Ad Hoc Committee on China and Technology Transfer" of the US Congress recently adopted a so-called "Investigation Report on Technology Transfer to China", accusing China of acquiring US military technology through its economic and technological exchanges and cooperation with the United States.

He noted that this is "groundless" and is aimed at damaging China's image and undermining the Sino-US relations.

He said that the development of Sino-US relations in the past two decades has proved that the development of friendly and mutually beneficial relations and cooperation between China and the United States, including the normal trade contacts and economic and technological exchanges, is in keeping with the mutual interests of the two countries and peoples, serves peace, stability and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large, and also conforms to the trend of the times and the common aspirations of the people of all countries.

"It is also the bipartisan common understanding and consensus of the general public in the United States," Zhu added.

According to Zhu, obsessed with the cold war mentality, a few US congressmen run counter to the historical trend and fabricate rumors out of thin air in an attempt to obstruct the improvement and development of Sino-US relations and they are doomed to failure.

Zhu noted that there is a favorable opportunity for improving and developing Sino-US relations and both sides should further enhance mutual trust and expand cooperation.

He said, "We hope that the US congressmen will proceed from the fundamental interests of the people of the two countries and do more to promote the development of the bilateral relations and mutually beneficial cooperation, and not to the contrary," he said.

Zhu added that China also hopes that the US government will take effective measures to remove all obstacles and maintain the sound and steady development of the Sino-US relations with actual deeds.
