Japan's Justice Minister Retracts Complaints on Constitution
Japan's Justice Minister Shozaburo Nakamura on Tuesday retracted his complaints about the constitution.
In his speech to the staff of his ministry on Monday, the minister said, "We Japanese are writhing because they cannot revise a constitution imposed by the allied forces so that the country would not be allowed to wage war, defend itself or have an army."
Nakamura, who has been a member of Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi's Cabinet since July, told the press on Tuesday that his remark did not mean that he wanted to revise the constitution.
He said he just wanted to say that Japan's participation in international peacekeeping activities has been confined under the constitution.
Prime Minister Obuchi has urged his cabinet members to be wary of their remarks.
