US Mars Polar Lander Launched From Florida

US NASA launched its second Mars probe--the Mars Polar Lander Sunday within one month for the purpose of looking for water on the red planet.

The spacecraft aboard a Delta II rocket blasted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida at 3:21 pm local time. After a 470 million miles flight, the Polar Lander will touch down on the surface of Mars on December 3 this year.

The goal is to find water ice in the Martian soil. "You have got to follow the water if you are looking for life," said Ed Weiler, head of NASA's space science division.

The Polar Lander is 3 feet tall and 12 feet wide, It also has three legs and a six-foot arm with a scoop on the end to scrape beneath the Martian surface.

Last December NASA launched the Mars Climate Orbiter, and in 1997 it launched Mars Pathfinder for landing on the planet.
