Euro's First Trading Day

  Beijing began trading in the Euro January 4 on the first banking day following introduction of the new currency.

  Nine outlets operated by the Beijing Branch of the Bank of China (BOC), China's leading foreign currency bank, recorded 39 transactions with US dollars used to purchase 557,000 Euros.

  Figures released by BOC's Beijing Branch also indicated that 15 individuals opened Euro accounts on Monday, with the total number of related Euro accounts rising to 16 since the formal launch of the new currency.

  The Beijing Branch also reported two Euro remittance transactions

  January 4.

  In addition, three companies have so far opened Euro accounts with the Beijing Branch of BOC.
