Expand Exchange, Enhance Understanding and Promote the Process of Peaceful Reunification

This article is written by Chen Yunlin to mark the 4th anniversary of the publication of President Jiang's eight-point proposals and the 20th anniversary of the publication of the Message to Compatriots in Taiwan.

Over the past 20 years, especially in recent years, historic, tremendous changes have taken place in the cross-Strait relationship under the guidance of the principle of "peaceful reunification, one country, two systems" and President Jiang's eight-point proposals and through the common efforts of the people across the Strait, the nearly 38-year-old state of isolation has been broken, the tense situation in the Taiwan Straits has been eased, exchanges sand contacts between the people across the Strait have been developing vigorously.

At present, the Chinese mainland is enjoying economic prosperity, continuously enhanced comprehensive national strength, and playing an increasingly important role in international affairs. In the process of achieving reunification of the motherland, we have taken a step forward. In accordance with the "one country, two systems" principle, Hong Kong has smoothly returned and Macao will also return to the embrace of the motherland at the end of this year. Today, the Chinese nation is faced with an unprecedented, excellent environment and an development opportunity.

We hope the Taiwan authorities will face the reality squarely, comply with the tide and popular feeling, abandon their erroneous policy that obstructs the development of cross-Strait relationship, respond to the suggestion set forth in President Jiang's eight-point proposals and conduct political negotiation with us under the "one China" policy and formally put an end to the state of hostility between the two sides of the strait as soon as possible, and realize three direct exchanges of mail, trade and air and shipping services at an early date. Although there exist political differences between the two sides, which, however, can entirely be ironed out through negotiation. Condition and time are ripe for political negotiation when cross-Strait relationship has developed to what it is today.

To realize reunification of the country, we place hope on the Taiwan compatriots who have a glorious tradition of patriotism. For a long time in the past, the Taiwan compatriots have made important contributions to promoting the development of the cross-Strait relationship. We hope that Taiwan compatriots can, through observing practice of the "one country, two systems" principle in Hong Kong and Macao, gradually deepen their understanding of the principle of "peaceful reunification, and one country, two systems" and, together with us, resolutely oppose the separatist activities to create the "independence of Taiwan", "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan", strive to expand cross-Strait economic exchange and cooperation, work hard to promote contacts and exchanges between people of the two sides, and continue to make new contributions to develop cross-Strait ties and expedite the process of peaceful reunification.
