Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975), a native of Fenghua, Zhejiang Province, had been Chairman and Director-General of the Kuomintang and President of the Kuomintang government in Taiwan. After his death in 1975, his eldest son, Chiang Ching-kuo (1910-1988) succeeded him as Chairman of the Kuomintang and in 1978 was elected President of the Kuomintang government.
