Location: Southeastern Asia, peninsula and northern one-third of the island of Borneo, bordering Indonesia and the South China Sea, south of Vietnam

Area: 329,750 sq km

Climate: tropical; annual southwest (April to October) and northeast (October to February) monsoons

Terrain: coastal plains rising to hills and mountains

Population: 21,376,066 (July 1999 est.)

Religions: Islam, Buddhism, Daoism, Hinduism, Christianity, Sikhism; note¡ªin addition, Shamanism is practiced on East Malaysia

Languages: Bahasa Malaysia is the national and official language, but English is widely spoken. Other languages such as Chinese (Cantonese and Hokkien), Iban and Tamil are spoken by minorities.
