Location: Northern Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea, Gulf of Bothnia, and Gulf of Finland, between Sweden and Russia

Area: 337,030 sq km

Climate: cold temperate; potentially subarctic, but comparatively mild because of moderating influence of the North Atlantic Current, Baltic Sea, and more than 60,000 lakes

Terrain: mostly low, flat to rolling plains interspersed with lakes and low hills

Population: 5,167,486 (July 2000 est.)

Religions: Evangelical Lutheran 89%, Greek Orthodox 1%, none 9%, other 1%

Languages: There are two official languages: Finnish, spoken by 93.6% of the population, and Swedish, spoken by 6% of the population. About 1700 people speak Same (Lapp). English is taught as the first foreign language.
