Chinese firm completes power project in Nigeria

China's Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) completed a multi-million U. S. dollars power plant in Nigeria to add 500 MW to the state power grid, an official of the company said on Saturday.

The Omotosho 500 Mega Watts (MW) Power Plant owned by the Nigerian government will be formally unveiled by Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan in southwest Nigeria's Ondo State on Saturday.

Liu Zhaolong, CMEC's managing director, told reporters in Akure, the state capital, that the four gas turbines to be inaugurated by the Nigerian leader would be added to the national grid.

"We are set to commission the Omotosho Phase 2. The four turbines are contributing 500 MW to the national grid," he declared.

"We have completed all the test running, and we find it imperative to hand it over to government after the warranty period of a year in overseeing the plant," Liu said.

The plant is the second of the 10 Nigerian Independent Power Projects (NIPP) under the management of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) Ltd.

The 10 power plants include the already inaugurated 434 MW Geregu II; Calabar, 630 MW; Egbema, 378 MW; Ihorvbor, 504 MW; Gbarain, 252 MW; Sapele, 504 MW; Omoku, 252MW; Alaoji, 1076 MW; and Olorunsogo, 750 MW.

The project was initiated in 2004 by the then government of former president Olusegun Obasanjo, but the project was abandoned between 2007 and 2009 due to funding arrangements.

President Jonathan on Oct. 4 inaugurated the 434 MW Geregu II in central north Nigeria's Kogi State.
