A Zambian-registered airline launched its flights to Tanzania as part of its efforts to penetrate the regional markets, a statement obtained on Tuesday said.

Proflight Zambia has launched three-times-a-week flights from Lusaka, the Zambian capital, to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

Captain Philip Lemba, the airline's director of government and industry affairs, said in the statement that the airline is determined to ensure that Zambia becomes a regional aviation hub and enables easy and convenient connections from nine domestic destinations in southern Africa.

"Dar es Salaam is the next step in a plan that we hope will see our firm grow into the airline of choice throughout the region," he said.

The flights will be departing from Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka on Monday and Friday mornings and arrive in Tanzania in the afternoon, while the return flights will be leaving the same days in the afternoon, he added.

The official, however, said the airline was still waiting for confirmation from regulators on timing for its Wednesday flights.

Tanzania, he said, was an important seaport for regional trade and that it provides a gateway for Zambian traders importing goods and that it was also a gateway to the exotic holiday location of Zanzibar hence the launch of the flight.

The route is the second international route for the airline after the launching of flights into Malawi in June this year. The airline is also planning to open new flights into Zimbabwe and South Africa.
