"LED lights can transmit wireless data through impulses formed by flickers with extremely high frequency," said Herald Haas, a professor of the University of Edinburgh and a German physicist who firstly developed the technology of surfing the Internet through light- Li-Fi.

In a public lecture named "My Li-Fi Revolution" on April 13, Haas played an online video clip with his laptop connected to the Internet through LED lights. When he blocked the light, the video stopped playing; when he turned the light down, the video couldn’t play fluently because the transmission rate slowed down.

On the basis of the LED wireless communication technology, researchers at the University of Edinburgh developed the wireless Internet access technology supported by solar power. Haas introduced that the transmission rate of a Li-Fi receiving device with solar batteries can reach 7Mbps, the same with the current transmission rate of wireless Internet access. The wireless Internet access technology supported by solar power can also realize wireless communication in remote and developing regions without any network infrastructure.

Haas said that the research and development of LED wireless communication technology are being undertaken in the U.S., Japan, China and European countries.
