Japan PM candidates hold debate

BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- The five candidates vying to become Japan's next prime minister have promised to resolve the country's nuclear crisis and revive its battered economy. They made the statements amid widespread public cynicism about a revolving door of leaders.

Banri Kaieda, Economy Minister said, "We do face the continual danger of earthquakes and tsunamis, so I want to make a Japan that is strong enough to withstand these. I would like to use these recovery efforts as a springboard to achieve an overall revival of Japan."

Seiji Maehara, former foreign minister said, "We should change the yen into foreign currencies, and with that currency buy quality resources, mines, food production facilities or company stock. If we use the high yen to buy these things I think we will safeguard Japan in the future. We will also be helping support the economies of America and Europe which are unstable at the moment. "

Yoshihiko Noda, Finance Minister said, "I think it is important for us to pursue Free Trade Agreements, as we have fallen behind Korea on this. On this basis I want to pursue a conscious policy of diplomacy regarding energy and resources. It is a complete reworking of this economic foreign policy that I want to emphasize."
