Switzerland's Michael Schmid avoided the mayhem behind him and took the Olympic gold medal in the rough and tumble debut of men's ski cross.

Starting shoulder to shoulder with three others at the start, Schmid took the lead from the gate and managed to avoid tangling skis or poles with any of the other competitors down the bumpy, sharply curved course.

Andreas Matt of Austria held steady behind Schmid to take silver while favourite Chris Del Bosco, a Canadian crashed hard after taking a bad jump which opened the way for Audun Groenvold of Norway to win the bronze.
