Per capita income of urban Tibetans up 20 times in 30 years

In 2007, the per capita disposable income of urban residents in Tibet was 11,131 yuan, an increase of almost 20 times compared to 1978 which was only 565 yuan, according to the relevant departments of the Tibet Autonomous Region.

Data shows that in 2007, the balance of deposits of urban residents in Tibet was 16.013 billion yuan, increasing by nearly 500 times more than the 33 million yuan in 1978.

People's living conditions have been improving, which has promoted the diversification in the composition of people's expenditures. Modern furniture has become a common possession in ordinary families. Nowadays, high-end consumer goods such as houses and automobiles have also become major expenditures for people.

According to 2006 statistics, the total number of commercial automobiles in Tibet reached 143,900, an increase of 35.2% year-on-year. Based on that year's total population of 2.81 million, out of every 20 Tibetans, one owned a commercial car.

Data provided by the Vehicle Management Station of Traffic Police Sub-branch of the Lhasa Public Security Bureau showed that by the end of 2007, private cars registered in Lhasa alone had reached nearly 50,000.

In the meantime, people's housing conditions have also improved gradually. As of 2007, the per capita living space of urban residents in Tibet had reached 32.7 square meters, and the per capita living space of rural residents in Tibet was 21.65 square meters.

In addition, for every 100 urban families there were 116 color televisions, 73 refrigerators and 82 washing machines. The total number of fixed and mobile telephone subscribers in Tibet had risen to 1.4429 million, which means 52 people out of every 100 has a telephone..

Authoritative data also shows that total retail sales of social consumer goods in Tibet reached 11.201 billion yuan in 2007, an increase of over 40 times compared to the 245 million yuan in 1978.
