To express appreciation for the care and support from all sectors of society for the People's Daily and the People's Daily Online, the Foreign Affairs Bureau of the People's Daily collaborated with the People's Daily Online hosted a New Year's gala party on the afternoon of December 18, 2008, in Beijing.
Zhang Yannong, president of the People's Daily, Ma Li, the newspaper's deputy editor-in-chief, Rashid Alimov, and He Jiazheng, President of People's Daily Online have attended the gala.
The guests invited include Rashid Alimov, ambassador of Tajikistan to China and some information officers from foreign embassies, foreign media officials and representatives of transnational enterprises. Totally over 100 people attended the event.
At the party, Mr Zhang Yannong, delivered an opening speech. He said, "This year is the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Daily. The People's Daily could not have developed without the support of our friends at home and abroad."
"Today, we have so many foreign friends here get together. We closeing ties with old friends and make new ones. The People's Daily would like to expand friendly exchanges and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation with other media from the world." Zhang said that in his speech.
In the end he called on to make concerted efforts to build a harmonious world characterized by lasting peace and prosperity.
Mr. Rashid Alimov also gave a speech. He said he reads the People's Daily and browses the People's Daily Online every morning to obtain great information about China and the world.
This information is all very important to an ambassador, Mr. Ambassador said. He also stated that good-neighborly and cooperative relations between Tajikistan and China have rapidly developed in 2008.
He also deemed that the People's Daily and the People's Daily Online have both played significant roles in the development of the good-neighborly between two countries.
After the gala party, all the guests had been invited to watch a stage play, "Secret Love in the Peach Blossom Spring," which is completely directed and casted by the staff with the People's Daily Online. The staff's splendid performance made a favorable impression on all the foreign guests.
