Japan needs to put China in the right position in its overall strategy

(People's Daily Online)

15:32, August 10, 2012

The year of 2012 is the 40th anniversary of the normalization of the China-Japan diplomatic relations. It should be a year for celebration, and for both sides to look into the future, but a series of disharmonies have brought dark shadow. In fact, for many years, the China-Japan relations have been in a dilemma because their economic relations are tightening but their political and social relations are backing off.

Many people regard Japan's psychological unbalance caused by the rise of China as the main incentive behind Japan's policy towards China.

Admittedly, it has never happened in history that both China and Japan were powerful countries in a same period. The situation of a stronger Japan and a weaker China, which has lasted about 100 years, is changing, and that is changing Japan's recognition of China. In order to clearly explain Japan's policy towards China, many aspects, including Japan's foreign policies, internal affairs and society in the 20 years after the Cold War, must all be analyzed.

First, Japan's foreign strategic thought was not effectively tempered during the Cold War period and as a result, it did not reach an agreement as to the new foreign strategy for a long period after the Cold War.
