China to help Mali build agricultural research center

BAMAKO, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The Malian Cabinet which met on Wednesday in an ordinary session that was chaired by Prime Minister Cheick Modibo Diarra, was informed of the plans to construct an agricultural research center with technical and financial support from China, an official statement has said.

The cost of the center is valued at about 55 million yuan RMB (about 8.7 million U.S. dollars) which will be given to Mali in form of a loan.

The center, which will be constructed on a 20-hectare piece of land in Koulikoro region, will be used for purposes of "experimentation, research and technical training as well as for the development of sustainable agriculture."

The center will mainly be used for the development of rice and maize farming.

In conclusion, the statement noted that the Mali and Chinese governments signed an agreement on March 1 for the construction of the agricultural center.
