BEIJING, June 4 (Xinhua) -- The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is to open its 12th leaders' meeting in Beijing on June 6-7.
Since its establishment in 2001, the SCO has been contributing to maintaining regional security and stability, and promoting the creation of a new international political and economic order featuring democracy, justice and rationality.
As the international and regional security situation and economic pattern are undergoing profound changes, the SCO has set itself the goal of adapting to the changes in its next 10 years.
SECURITY COOPERATION
As an intergovernmental organization, security cooperation is the core and foundation of the SCO, Tatyana Sinitsina, editor in chief of the Russian InfoSCO website, told Xinhua.
The expert said that judging from the SCO's performance since its establishment, it has the capability to protect its member states from the threats of terrorism, separatism and extremism.
Eugeny Bazhanov, director of the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry, agreed. He said all the SCO members are facing "three evil forces" besides other serious problems, therefore solving those problems on the basis of mass collaboration is critical, and maintaining regional stability and security remains one of the SCO's major responsibilities in the future.
