Russia concerned over instability spreading from Libya

MOSCOW, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Instability in Libya has been spreading to neighboring countries, specifically in Mali, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday.

"Outbreaks of violence continue to be reported in Libya and the instability is flowing into neighboring states in the form of arms smuggling and infiltration of rebel fighters," Lavrov was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.

The minister said the results of the destabilizing processes could be seen in Mali, adding that any other Libyan-style scenario could not be accepted.

"We feel sympathy for Libyan interim authorities' efforts to restore order and we support them, but the burden of problems has not become any easier there," Lavrov said.

The top Russian diplomat also considered the presence of NATO forces as a destabilizing factor in Libya and the region at large.

NATO air strikes, which had nothing to do with the U.N. Security Council's mandate, made Libya fall into extreme instability, Lavrov said.
