Backgrounder: Highlights of recent China-EU cultural exchanges

BRUSSELS, April 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the European Union (EU) are scheduled to launch the first-ever high-level people-to-people dialogue here on Wednesday, thus becoming another highlight of the ever-increasing cultural exchanges between the two sides.

The following is a brief list of major events concerning China-EU cultural exchanges over the past two or three years:

In 2009, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso jointly proposed an EU-China Year of Youth during the 12th EU-China summit held in Nanjing.

In 2010, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso jointly proposed an EU-China Year of Intercultural Dialogue during the 13th EU-China summit held in Brussels.

In 2010, the first EU-China high-level cultural forum was launched in Brussels as a supporting event for 13th EU-China summit, and both sides agreed to make it an annual event.

In 2011, the EU-China Year of Youth was launched with all-round exchange activities among youth from China and the EU throughout the year.

In February 2012, the EU-China Year of Intercultural Dialogue was launched in Brussels to further boost mutual understanding and cultural cooperation as the second themed year following the success of the Year of Youth.

In April 2012, the China-EU high-level people-to-people dialogue will be co-launched by China's State Councilor Liu Yandong and EU's culture commissioner Androulla Vassiliou.

It is designed to be a lively platform for mutual exchange of ideas, following the established high-level economic and trade dialogue and high-level strategic dialogue.
