BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- China is "shocked" over the military coup in Guinea-Bissau, Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said here Friday.

Liu told a regular briefing that China "was worried about the impact" brought by the coup on the west African country's political and security situation.

"We will make further assessment according to development of the situation," he said.

Soldiers took control of key areas of Guinea-Bissau's capital amid heavy gunfire on Thursday, according to witnesses.

Raymond Preira, the interim president of Guinea-Bissau, was arrested by the military the same day, according to local media reports.
