China calls for early agreement on venue for Iran, P5+1 dialogue

08:41, April 06, 2012

BEIJING, April 5 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday called for an early agreement on the venue for nuclear issue talks between Iran and six international mediators.

"(China) hopes that all the parties concerned will make joint efforts to reach an agreement on the venue for the dialogue at an early date," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei at a regular news briefing.

The venue dispute arose days ahead of the upcoming talks between Iran and six world powers, namely the United States, Britain, France, Russia, and China, plus Germany, also known as P5+1.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said last week that the six world powers and Iran had agreed on meeting in Istanbul on April 13 to resume their stalled talks over Tehran's controversial nuclear program.

But Iran's Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi said Wednesday that China and Iraq are also considered by Tehran as the venues for the talks.

"The Chinese side believes that the venue for the dialogue is not the most important issue," Hong said, adding that "what is crucial is that the P5+1 and Iran should start the dialogue, push ahead with it and achieve results through the dialogue."

I agree with the author... the most important thing is that talks proceed as soon as possible, not where they take place.

China would be a great venue for the talks. The West will not agree to Iraq or Syria, and Iran no longer trusts Turkey. Iran also doesn"t trust European powers. That leaves China as achoice both sides could agree upon.
