China calls for peaceful resolution of Syria issue

Arab League Secretary General Nabil el-Araby met with Li Huaxin, ambassador of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, at the headquarters of the League of Arab States on Feb. 13, 2012.

Both parties exchanged their views on the situation in Syria and the two sides agreed to focus on maintaining regional peace and stability, strive for solving the Syria issue in a peaceful and political way. Both parties agreed to keep communications and contact on the issue.

Li said, given the continuous escalation of the situation in Syria recently, his visit to Egypt, the League of Arab States and other Arab nations mainly aims to introduce China's stance and basic policies and listen to the perspectives of the Arab nations as well.

Li said that China has placed close attention to the situation in Syria and urged for a peaceful and constructive resolution to the Syria issues according to the principles of defending the fundamental interests of Syrians, maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East, the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and relevant norms on international relations.

He said relevant parties of Syria should immediately stop violent actions and respect Syrians' requirements for revolution and appeal to maintaining their own interests, start inclusive political processes participated in by all parties of Syria as soon as possible and solve problems through dialogues and negotiation.

Li also held talks with the vice minister of Egypt's Foreign Ministry and exchanged their views on the situation in Syria.
