China, Russia open window of opportunity for solving Syria issue

China and Russia’s veto of the draft resolution for the Syria issue in the UN Security Council has caught much attention of international media.

In fact, what China and Russia actually vetoed is external power’s action of pushing the regime change in a country by force, which goes against tenets and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and violates the fundamental principle of international relations. This is something China cannot accept.

The Syria issue is very complicated. It involves not only historical and religious contradictions between Syria and other relevant countries but also the current international focus - the Iranian nuclear issue. All these difficult issues are interrelated.

International communities should respect the mediation efforts made by relevant parties for the Syria issue. What China is doing is to safeguard tenets and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and the fundamental principle of international relations but not to let the UN Security Council turn into a rubber stamp. China's standpoint is fair and responsible and does not favor any side.
