Fiji-China Friendship Association launches on enhancing bilateral ties

14:59, February 03, 2012

SUVA, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Another milestone in bilateral relations between Fiji and China was marked on Friday through the launch of the Fiji-China Friendship Association (FCFA) in Suva.

A ceremony was held at the Lower Civic Auditorium in Suva, which was attended by Fiji's Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Dr Jiko Luveni and Chinese Ambassador to Fiji Huang Yong.

"Looking ahead, there are great potentials for exchanges and discussions, greater awareness of life in China and life in Fiji. When people from China visit Fiji, they will find intimate friends and vice versa. Processes and procedures will be minimized when facilitated in the spirit of friendship," said Luveni.

Fiji's Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, who was asked to express his apologies for his absence to the ceremony as he had to attend to very urgent matters because of current flood situation in some parts of the country, sent his "warmest" congratulatory message, saying that the genuine interest by China to work with Fiji without conditions has resulted in strong bilateral relations between the two countries.

Speaking to members of the local Chinese community and local dignitaries, Luveni said,"this association is the extension of the relations between our two countries to include our people in an effort to promote and strengthen understanding, friendship and cooperation," adding that Fiji has always been very grateful to China and its people for the countless assistance provided since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1975.
