UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- A performance spotlighting China's cultural heritage was staged Wednesday evening at the U.N. General Assembly Hall.

Some 400 Chinese artists and students performed various styles of traditional music and dance, including the Feng Yang flower drum dance, a leather-silhouette show, and Mongolian and Tibetan dances.

Li Baodong, the Chinese permanent representative to the U.N., said in his opening remarks that the performance would offer "a good opportunity to appreciate the richness, diversity, beauty and charm of Chinese culture."

"Safeguarding intangible cultural heritage is a lofty task facing the entire human society," Li said. "It is a mission that the United Nations has long been committed to."

"The Chinese government has also made enormous efforts and played a vital part in protecting the world's intangible cultural heritage," the ambassador said.

U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro, Under Secretary-General Sha Zukang and some 1,400 U.N. diplomats, staff members and overseas Chinese attended the nearly three-hour performance.
