US congresswoman salutes Chinese Lunar New Year

11:17, January 24, 2012

US Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee on Monday released a statement saluting the Chinese Lunar New Year, which falls on Monday.

"Chinese Lunar New Year is a thousand year tradition celebrated by billions of Chinese all over the world," Jackson Lee said. "It is my great pleasure to send my new year's greetings to the Chinese Consulate General in Houston, as well as the Chinese communities in Greater Houston Area."

"My warmest wishes go to all Chinese Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, the people of Asia, and all those around the world who are celebrating the Lunar New Year. May you be blessed with peace, prosperity and good health -- now and in the year ahead," she said.

"The United States values its important partnership with the People's Republic of China and the Chinese community here in Houston and all across America," Jackson Lee said, noting that the Chinese people's "rich culture and traditions add to the very diversity that makes our country great."

"During this special occasion, Americans of Asian descent will continue the rich traditions of the past and begin new ones with their own families", said Jackson Lee.

Jackson Lee is the US Representative for Texas's 18th congressional district, serving since 1995. The district includes most of inner-city Houston.
