BEIJING, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- China and Vietnam on Thursday vowed to enhance parliamentary exchanges and cooperation and serve the development of bilateral ties.

The pledge came out of the meeting between China's top legislator, Wu Bangguo, and visiting Vietnamese National Assembly Vice Chairman Tong Thi Phong on Thursday afternoon at the Great Hall of the People.

"The in-depth development of China-Vietnam ties raises higher requirements for cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries," said Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislative body.

The two sides, on the basis of existing cooperation, should give full play to their legislative bodies, conduct closer friendly communication and strengthen exchanges on governing, democracy, legal systems and improvement of peoples' livelihood.

He called on the two sides to continue to consolidate the foundation of public opinion for the development of China-Vietnam relations, and to inject new vitality into parliamentary exchanges.
