HANOI, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met here Wednesday with the chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam, Nguyen Sinh Hung, to discuss the development of relations between their two countries.

Xi, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said in the meeting that both China and Vietnam are in a critical period of reforms and development.

"The primary task for our two parties and two countries is to develop economy and improve the people's livelihood," he said.

The two countries should consolidate bilateral good-neighborliness and friendship, enhance political mutual trust, and deepen pragmatic cooperation so as to ensure that China-Vietnam relations will advance along a correct direction, he said.

Xi stressed that exchanges between the national legislatures of the two countries constitute an important part of bilateral ties.

"In recent years, China's National People's Congress (NPC) and the National Assembly of Vietnam have strengthened communication and cooperation. The frequent contacts between leaders of the two legislatures increased mutual understanding and friendship," Xi said.

China's NPC and the National Assembly of Vietnam shouldered important responsibilities for the socialist democratic legal construction in each country, Xi said.

He hoped the two legislatures would increase their exchanges and learn from each other because it is of great importance in enhancing the mutual understanding and friendship for the two peoples and promoting bilateral ties.

Hung said the National Assembly of Vietnam believed Xi's current visit is very important for advancing Vietnam-China ties.

Vietnam-China good-neighborliness is the common treasure for the two peoples and the Vietnamese side deeply cherishes such friendship, Hung said.

The National Assembly of Vietnam is willing to enhance cooperation with China's NPC and make its efforts to develop Vietnam-China ties in line with the consensus reached by the top leaders of the two countries, Hung said.

Xi is on a three-day official visit to Vietnam that started Dec. 20.

Vietnam is the first-leg of Xi's Asia tour. He will also pay an official visit to Thailand.
