WASHINGTON, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- The fourth high-level dialogue between the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Democratic and Republican parties of the United States were held here on Thursday in a move to deepen mutual understanding and party-to-party exchanges.

Wang Jiarui, chief of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee and head of the CPC delegation, said that China-U.S. relations have entered a new era of jointly building a cooperative partnership based on mutual benefit and mutual respect.

Strengthening direct dialogue and communication and conducting candid and in-depth exchange of views on governance philosophy, China-U.S. relations and major international and regional issues of common concern are very important for the two sides to enhance mutual trust, expand consensus and boost sound and steady long-term development of party-to-party relations, he said.

The discussions centered on two major topics of "The Future of China and the U.S. and the Role of Political Parties" and "Common Interests and Pragmatic Cooperation Between China and the U.S. in the Asia-Pacific Region."

Representatives of the Democratic and Republican parties recognized the important role played by party-to-party dialogue in advancing the China-U.S. relationship, which is one of the most important bilateral relationships in the world.

Both sides praised the previous three rounds of high-level dialogues for having deepened mutual understanding, expanded the converging points of common interests and enhanced pragmatic cooperation between the two countries.

The two sides agreed to keep close consultations and hold their fifth high-level dialogue at an appropriate time.

The first high-level dialogue between the two countries' political parties was held at the end of March 2010.
