Substantial help

China and Sri Lanka have maintained a healthy and stable relationship over the years and increasingly deepened exchange and cooperation in various fields. The current bilateral economic and trade cooperation is more active than at any point in history.

According to China's statistics, the economic and trade amount between China and Sri Lanka reached nearly 2.1 billion U.S. dollars in 2010, an increase of 28 percent from 2009.

The Sri Lankan government launched a large-scale post-war reconstruction effort after defeating the guerrilla army known as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in May 2009.

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Gamini Lakshman Peiris said China had assisted Sri Lanka with the construction of a number of major infrastructure projects, including ports, docks, highways and power stations.

"China has contributed to Sri Lanka's economic development in many areas," said Peiris in an interview with the reporter, "The Sri Lankan people have received substantial benefits from these projects."
