China sets example for poverty alleviation: UK official

21:16, November 29, 2011

BEIJING, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- A senior British official said Tuesday that China has set an example for other countries in its efforts to alleviate poverty.

UK International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell made the remark while visiting China from Nov. 28 to 29.

"China has lifted hundreds of millions of its own citizens out of poverty," Mitchell said, adding that China has cut the proportion of its people living below the poverty line from 84 percent to 16 percent in 25 years.

"We are hugely respectful of what China has done and what China has achieved for its own people," he said.

China has also played a key role in international development, particularly in the areas of health care, trade, peacekeeping and climate change, Mitchell said.

However, Mitchell pointed out that the cooperation between Britain and China could be much more significant than it currently is.

Mitchell said since China is investing in some of the world's poorest countries and delivering good results, Britain expects to work with China in these countries to focus on areas such as trade and climate change.
