Chinese leaders meet Turkmen President, pledging cooperation

08:42, November 24, 2011

BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese leaders on Wednesday met with visiting Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, vowing to strengthen bilateral ties and upgrade cooperation.

Chinese President Hu Jintao said that it is a policy of the Chinese government to develop friendly and cooperative relations with Turkmenistan on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefits.

Hu proposed to strengthen political trust with Turkmenistan, enhance high-level exchanges, boost already-substantial cooperation in the energy field and non-energy sectors such as transportation, telecommunications, chemicals, textile and agriculture.

After their meeting, the two presidents signed a joint declaration on deepening bilateral friendly cooperation and an agreement on increasing Turkmenistan's natural gas supply to China.

Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo called on the two states to give full play to the roles of their parliaments in promoting friendly exchanges at various levels and in different fields so as to further bilateral ties. The two sides could also enhance exchanges of experience in governance, as well as the building of democracy and legislation, Wu said.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao proposed that the two nations should fortify their cooperation on the down-and-upper streams of the chemical industry to establish a long-term strategic partnership on energy cooperation, and boost two-way collaboration on high technology in an aim to establish balanced, comprehensive and high-quality trade relations.

Berdymukhamedov arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for a four-day state visit to China. It is the president's third state visit to China since becoming leader of Turkmenistan in 2007.

On Wednesday afternoon, Berdymukhamedov was awarded the title of emeritus professor of Peking University at the Great Hall of the People.
