China holds an open attitude to Trans-Pacific Partnership pact: official

10:02, November 16, 2011

BEIJING, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- China holds an open attitude toward the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a free-trade pact under negotiation between the United States and eight other APEC economies, said Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin in Beijing on Tuesday.

"China pursues all-around trading relations with other countries," Liu said prior to Premier Wen Jiabao's attendance at a series of meetings for East Asian leaders held in Bali, Indonesia later this month.

As to whether the trading relationship between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations will offset the influence of the TPP, Liu said that it was "a question based on assumption."

"We hold an open attitude toward all cooperative initiatives conducive to the economic integration and common prosperity in the Asia-Pacific," he added.

However, the pact is not expected to be discussed during the East Asia Summit in Bali, said the official, as the TPP talks are "a process independent of the cooperative mechanism in East Asia."

Currently, nine countries including Singapore, New Zealand, Chile, Brunei, the United States, Australia, Peru, Vietnam and Malaysia are discussing a framework for the TPP pact and China is not a participant.

"We will make good use of the existing platforms, as always, to advance the cooperation in East Asia," he added.
