SUVA, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- China Fire Department (CFD) delegates on Thursday paid their first official visit to Fiji's National Fire Authority (NFA) following the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the two sides in 2009.

The delegation, led by CFD Director General Major General Chen Weiming, was honored with a parade by fire fighters at the Suva Fire Station and then welcomed by the Ministry of Local Government.

Fiji's Urban Development, Housing and Environment Permanent Secretary Taina Tagicakibau said the relationship between the two fire services reflected the important cooperative partnership established between Fiji and China.

"Cooperation in such fields as trade, agriculture, culture, education and tourism have gradually expanded," Tagicakibau said, adding the visit opens up potential opportunities that can assist Fiji in the enhancement of its capability through the experiences and technology provided by China.

The relationship between NFA and CFD was first established in 2007, which was taken to another level following successful discussions which culminated with the signing of a memorandum of understanding in 2009 for the duration of three years.

NFA procured three brand new fire appliances, fire equipment and fire tunics at very competitive prices from China in 2009.

The two fire trucks hold tank capacities of 12,000 and 5,000 litres respectively and are the largest such appliances Fiji has ever possessed.

The Chinese delegates will depart Fiji on Saturday.
