Mombasa, Kenya, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese ambassador here on Wednesday handed over 2,500 tons of rice from China to the Kenyan government, indicating that China started delivering its 2 billion Kenyan shillings' (20 million U. S. dollars) food aid to Kenya to fight against food shortage.

Ambassador of China to Kenya Liu Guangyuan, on a hand-over ceremony held at Mombasa Port, said that the Chinese government has paid great attention to the most severe drought and famine in the Horn of Africa including Kenya.

He also noted that the Chinese government has announced food and cash support totaling 443.2 million Chinese Renminbi (about 70 million dollars) to the Horn of Africa, the largest aid provided by the Chinese government to foreign countries.

Kenyan Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka received the relief food on behalf of the Kenyan government and praised China's quick response to the famine disaster in Kenya.

"I also thank China for its agriculture cooperation with Kenya to help us produce more to meet the food demand," Musyoka added.

Up to now, the Chinese government decided to provide 2 billion shillings' relief food to Kenya, including rice, wheat, beans, maize flour and cooking oil. The first and second batches of the food aid totaling 2,500 tons of rice arrived here respectively on Sept. 28 and Oct. 1.

The third and forth batches departed from China respectively on Sept. 23 and Sept.30, and were expected to arrive in Mombasa Port at the end of October, adding the delivered aid value of the four batches to 500 million shillings.
