Chinese people slam US weapons sale to Taiwan

China slammed Obama administration for its latest decision to upgrade F-16 fighter jets it sold earlier to Taiwan, warning bilateral relations will suffer from the $5.3 billion weapons deal.

Military ties between the two major Pacific-rim countries are to be negatively affected, analysts say. China put high-level military links between its PLA and the Pentagon in a freezer after Obama administration sold a package of advanced weapon systems to Taiwan early 2010.

"The Chinese military expresses its utmost indignation and strong condemnation of this action that gravely interferes in China's domestic affairs and damages China's sovereignty and national security interests," Ministry of Defense spokesman Geng Yansheng said in Beijing yesterday.

The weapons sales would "create serious obstacles to the development of ordinary exchanges between our two militaries," Geng said.

The People's Daily, China's most important newspaper, said in a commentary: "American politicians are totally mistaken if they believe they can, on the one hand, demand that China behave as a responsible great power and cooperate with the U.S. on a wide variety of world issues, while on the other hand irresponsibly and wantonly harm China's core interests."

A majority of Chinese online readers commented on the chat-rooms that Beijing should be firm in expressing Chinese people's strong opposition to U.S. weapons sale to China's Taiwan island. Some suggested Beijing cut its purchase of U.S. government debts.

China's Foreign Ministry criticized the Obama administration for telling U.S. Congress on Wednesday it plans a US$5.3 billion upgrade of Taiwan's F-16 fighter fleet and warned the move would damage China-US military and security links.

Late on Wednesday, Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun summoned U.S. Ambassador Gary Locke in Beijing to deliver the protest.

"The wrongdoing by the US side will inevitably undermine bilateral relations as well as exchanges and cooperation in military and security areas," Zhang told Locke.

"China sees the arms sale as a political insult, because the United States says our two sides are in the same boat and it hopes that China will buy its Treasury bonds - but then politically the United States does this," said Sun Zhe, a professor at Beijing's Tsinghua University who specializes in U.S. policy.

The US upgrade of Taiwan's 145 F-16s will give them much the same capabilities as the late-model F-16 C/Ds that Taiwan has sought for years, U.S. officials said.

The US has one interest. To use Taiwan as a floating aircraft carrier against the PRC.The US does not desire peace between Taiwa and the mainland their only interets is to spark a new cold war - Many americans hawkes inside the Pentagon have one mission - a war with China within the next 2-3 years which could become a harsh reality in the event either Perry or Bachmann win the White House in 2012.
