BEIJING, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong met here on Monday with Governor John Kitzhaber of the State of Oregon in the United States, pledging more exchanges and cooperation between China and Oregon.

Liu appreciated the cooperation between China and Oregon, saying it was a wise decision for the Oregon State Senate and House of Representatives to pass a bill making the instruction of Mandarin Chinese available in all public schools in Oregon.

Liu said the active cooperation between China and Oregon, especially in cultural exchanges and cooperation between local governments, are conducive to consolidating the social basis of China and the U.S.

It could also enhance bilateral economic ties and improve mutual understanding between the two peoples, she added.

Liu expects Oregon to seize more opportunities for cooperation with China and play a larger role in promoting Sino-U.S. cultural exchanges and cooperation between local governments.

Kitzhaber is making the visit to China at the invitation of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs.
