Putting people first vital to political parties: Int'l conference

NANNING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Political parties should always put people first and let people share the "fruit of development," said officials and delegates attending an Asian political conference that ended Tuesday.

A total of 137 representatives from 52 political parties and related organizations from 26 nations participated in the special conference of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) in Nanning, capital of southwest Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The three-day conference, "Development and People's Access: Deliver the Fruits of Development to the People," focused on the role Asia's political parties can play in promoting economic and social development and improving people's living conditions.

Vice President Xi Jinping said in a congratulatory letter to the conference that the Communist Party of China (CPC) will spare no pains to ensure all its people share in the fruits of China's social and economic development.

Xi called on political parties of Asian nations to give equal attention to both speed and quality, fairness and efficiency in their development, while incorporating economic development with the improvement of people's living conditions.

If people are happy, society will be stable, only then the ruling party can stay in power, said Savanaa Lkhagvasuren, foreign policy advisor to the Secretary General of the Mongolian People's Party, while attending the conference.

Shane L. Stone, former federal president of the Liberal Party of Australia, said that no matter how different societies and people are, they all have the same value -- economic achievements must be shared among people.

Although Asia has been the engine of the world economy over the past 50 years, it remains a big challenge for governments to make sure all the people have shared the fruits of development, said Khalid Mahmud Choudhury, an official with the Bangladesh Awami League, at the conference.

Governments have to be honest and transparent to fulfill this task, he said.

Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said at the opening ceremony that insufficient and low-level development remains a major problem for many Asian nations.

Governments have a responsibility to lift the quality of development, bridge the gap between rich and poor and improve people's livelihoods.

During the conference, delegates also proposed the establishment of an Asian Anti-Poverty Fund and an Asian Peace and Reconciliation Council, according to the Nanning Declaration on Development and People's Access, which was released Tuesday.

Participating political parties also made three proposals in the declaration -- to give priority to development, to pursue inclusive development, and to place greater stress on the mode of development.

The ICAPP is a forum of political parties of Asia-Oceanic countries that was initiated in 2000 by the Philippine political party Lakas-CMD (Christian Muslim Democrats).
