CHENGDU, Jan. 3 -- Eight people have been detained after a gas blast caused a fire in a shopping mall in southwest China's Sichuan Province, leaving four dead and 40 injured, local authorities said Friday.
The blast, which hit the Mo'erma shopping mall in the city of Luzhou on Dec. 26, happened after maintenance workers made a mistake when connecting two natural gas pipelines outside the mall, said an official with the Jiangyang District government.
The error caused a gas leak inside the mall, which then caused the blast and the ensuing fire, the officials said, citing investigators.
The accident killed three local residents and another from east China's Fujian Province, according to the government.
