Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court has rejected a French citizen's appeal of a district court ruling that sentenced him to two months of detention for taking a taxi on a drunken joy ride, the intermediate court said Sunday.
The French man, who was not identified, filed the appeal after the Xuhui District People's Court found him guilty of reckless driving, according to a court press release. Along with detention, the district court slapped him with a fine of 2,000 yuan ($322.50).
According to the press release, the French man and a Russian friend left a bar on Yueyang Road in Xuhui district at 5:15 am on August 10, 2012. Outside the bar, they tried hailing a taxi parked outside, but the driver was busy talking with a friend on the roadside.
The French man, who had been drinking that night, got into the unattended taxi, which still had the keys inside, and drove off. After seeing his taxi leave without him, the driver jumped into another taxi and followed the French man.
The French man drove several blocks to Fuxing Road Middle and Xiangyang Road South, where the taxi car caught up to him and got him to stop the vehicle.
The two taxis suffered damages in the chase. The repairs cost about 3,000 yuan.
Police took the French man to a hospital to check his blood-alcohol level, which came back about 2.32 milligrams per milliliter, nearly four times the legal limit, according to the press release.
