Beijing subway single-day ridership hits 10 million

The Beijing subway's single-day ridership hit a new high recently, Beijing Morning Post reports.

According to the latest statistics released by Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport (BMCT), the single-day ridership of the 16 lines of Beijing's subway system hit a record 10.275 million passengers on Friday.

Zhan Minghui, an official of BMCT, said the "10 million" daily-ridership is expected to become a normal number in the future with the extensions of subway lines.

Zhan added that due to the city's ongoing traffic jams, more residents are using the subway for work, school, restaurant, shopping and sports games.

According to the previous report, Beijing subway got the major expansion of its network since December 30, 2012 with the opening of Line 6 and extensions to Line 8, Line 9 and Line 10. The addition of track increased the total network length to 442 km and allowed the Beijing Subway to overtake the Shanghai Metro as the world's longest metro system.
