POLICE caught a man yesterday after he allegedly beat a parking fee collector to death over a parking fare on Saturday.

Police declined to name the suspect and said they were still investigating.

The victim was a 44-year-old man surnamed Tang, according to Xinmin Evening News.

The incident happened about 2pm on Saturday at a motel parking lot on Minhang District's Wuzhong Road.

When he tried to leave the parking lot without paying the 20 yuan (US$3.22) fee, the suspect was stopped by Tang.

A witness said the driver stepped out of his car and began to beat Tang. "The driver also kicked him," said the witness.

After Tang fell to the ground, the driver fled. Tang was pronounced dead at a hospital. The newspaper said the man was a customer of the motel, which was not confirmed by police.
