Beijing tops other cities in commuting time

BEIJING commuters spend more time on daily travel than people in other mainland cities, according to a survey released by the Chinese Academy of Sciences yesterday.

They spend on average 52 minutes a day to commute between home and work, 14 minutes more than last year and almost three times more compared with third-tier cities like Zhongshan in southern Guangdong Province.

Guangzhou, Shanghai and Shenzhen, all dynamic first-tier cities, follow the capital with 48, 47 and 46 minutes respectively.

Commuters in the 50 cities covered in the survey spend an average of 39 minutes on travel, said Niu Wenyuan, the chief writer of the survey report.

He said longer commuting time in many cities showed the development of public transit system is lagging behind the pace of urbanization. The rising number of cars aggravated the problem.
