Poor driving, maintenance blamed for Hunan bus crash

CHANGSHA, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Poor driving and the vehicle's bad condition were to blame for a bus crash on Thursday that killed four people and injured eight in central China's Hunan Province, local authorities said Friday.

The bus, which was carrying 47 people -- mainly students -- along with its driver, fell off a 30-meter-high slope in Yongzhou City, Hunan, around 5 p.m. Thursday. Four students died and 44 other people on board were injured.

The bus, rented from Yongzhou Wangda Transport Corp., had not been sent for its annual examination in June and was in bad condition, said an official of the local traffic police authorities.

The 42-year-old driver, a man surnamed Zeng, was not the usual driver of the bus. Zeng was unfamiliar with the vehicle and allowed it to rush off the slope due to poor driving, the official said.

The 49-seater bus was taking 46 students and one teacher from Hunan Daoxian County Junior Normal College, in Daoxian, to Yongzhou, when the accident happened. The students are aged between 17 and 21.

Two of them died at the scene and another two in hospital.

The driver, who was one of eight people from the crash to enter a critical condition, is now under police custody.

The probe into the accident is continuing.
